Visualizing Literature: Words in Context

Words in Context, from the Visualizing Literature toolset, allows users to select a text from Visualizing Literature's list of grade school curriculum exemplar creative commons texts and perform a keyword search. The results of the search show all instances of the word, with all surrounding text found on the same line for context. All texts are searchable, and can be sorted by writer, title, publication year, grade level, availability for analysis and availablility of a direct link to the text. Please note that, as this toolset is still in beta, the selection of texts is currently limited, though over 300 texts are forthcoming. As of 2014, this toolset is no longer available as the website has been taken down. It may still be viewed via the Internet Archive.

Speech Tagger - Plain Text (TAPoRware)

The speech tagger allows you to highlight different parts of a text where each part is identified by a different colour. The tool uses TreeTagger to find the different parts of speech. Note that using the TreeTagger tool is very taxing on the server and may take a long time before results are returned.

Raining Words - Other (TAPoR)

'Raining Words' is a tool designed to display word frequency information, minus the words in a chosen stop list, from a user-specified document in a Java applet. High frequency words appear larger and move more slowly than lower frequency words. This tool requires Java 1.4.2_08 or a more recent version for your browser. As the TAPoRware interface defaults to opening the applet in a new window, popups must also be enabled from the TAPoRware site in order to see the results. This tool’s functionality has been incorporated into Voyant available online at www.voyant-tools.org.

Raw Grep - Other (TAPoRware)

This tool can find a user-specified string of characters anywhere in a text document. If the string is part of a word or another non-space string, the word or the non-space string will be displayed as a unit. The search can also be used to view a concordance of either words, sentences, or lines surrounding the result. The tool will treat HTML or XML text as plain text. This tool’s functionality has been incorporated into Voyant available online at www.voyant-tools.org.
