Old Bailey Data Warehousing Interface

This prototype was produced as a proof-of-concept for the Criminal Intent project. It allows the records of the Old Bailey Online project to be searched such that the returned results can be viewed as either a timeline or a concordance of terms. The tool allows for reasonably complex queries to be placed and a range of different formats for the returned charts to be selected. The tool is primarily built with Python and SQLite and makes use of the Google Chart API for some output options.

Omeka

Omeka is a content management system designed for the display of library, museum, archives, and scholarly collections and exhibitions. Omeka falls at a crossroads of Web Content Management, Collections Management, and Archival Digital Collections Systems. Omeka is designed with non-IT specialists in mind, allowing users to focus on content and interpretation rather than programming. It brings Web 2.0 technologies and approaches to academic and cultural websites to foster user interaction and participation. It makes top-shelf design easy with a simple and flexible templating system. Its robust open-source developer and user communities underwrite Omeka’s stability and sustainability. Omeka allows users to publish cultural heritage objects, extend its functionality with themes and plugins, and curate online exhibits with digital objects.

Publishing

Omeka.net

Omeka.net provides a web-publishing platform to curate collections and create exhibitions of digitized content. Omeka.net has grown out of the Omeka project. Omeka.net provides some of the same functionality as Omeka, but does not require the user to provide hosting or to maintain their installation in any way. However, use of Omeka.net limits customization, and hosting more than 500MB of content requires a paid account. Objects in the collection can be cataloged with Dublin core metadata fields and georeferenced for display on a map. Omeka.net includes several plugins, including COinS (which makes objects in Omeka accessible to citations management software, like Zotero), HTML5 Media (to play audio and video), and Library of Congress Suggest (which will auto-populate fields with LoC authority and subject headings).

OmniPage

A software tool capable of performing Optical Character Recognition (OCR) upon a set of images. It was one of the first OCR recognition software to be developed. It was developed in the late 1980s and sold by Caere Corporation. It is currently owned by Kofax Inc. It achieves the task by analysing pixel sets and in an image and cross-matching them to a dictionary of words. Omnipage automates large sections of the digitisation process enabling physical objects to be scanned, processed using the OCR software and exported to a document file format. Later versions of the software incorporate image enhancement features to improve scan quality (and recognition results) and better support for complex page layouts and forms. Visualization

Onodo

Onodo is a user friendly tool for doing basic visualisation and analysis within a browser making it cross-platform right out of the box. Data can be entered via their intuitive, in-browser node and edge creation tables or imported from a file. As data is added it is instantly previewed and displayed. The visual appearance can be tweaked on the fly and customised in a variety of ways (including applying a unique image or URL to each node). Once created, visualisations can be embedded and shared outside of the Onodo browser environment. Moreover, with a click of a button, Onodo calculates standard network parameters such as betweenness, closeness and displays these values within the table. It calculates and demonstrates basic network parameters and measures quickly and allows for the creation of chapters that cement using the visualisation as a data-driven narrative device.
